Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease, also called spondylosis, causes the discs of the spine to break down. Because the function of these discs is to cushion the vertebrae and act as shock absorbers, their deterioration leads to a variety of painful complications. For one thing, degenerative disc disease can cause the discs to bulge outward, where they can press against the nerves running through the spinal cord or the local nerve roots. When the discs bulge, they can also cause the facet joints that stack the vertebrae on either side of them to rub against each other.

Damage to discs in the cervical spine can produce localized pain in the upper spine as well as pain and/or numbness in the chest, shoulders, arms and hands. Likewise, degenerative disc disease in the lumbar area affects the calves, legs, and feet.

How is Degenerative Disc Disease Diagnosed and Treated?
Degenerative Disc Disease can be seen on MRI scans. For serious and persistent cases, surgery can be a good option. New advancements in surgical procedures have brought a number of benefits to DDD patients, including a reduced recovery time, less tissue damage, and less risk of complications.

The Bonati Institute for Advanced Arthroscopic Surgery is one of the foremost treatment facilities in the country for DDD and other chronic spinal conditions. The Bonati Arthroscopic Laser Cervical Decompression-Posterior Approach and the Bonati Arthroscopic Laser Foramenoplasty of the Lumbar Spine are the two procedures most commonly used to treat degenerative disc disease.
