Chronic Back Pain

Chronic back pain can truly alter your quality of life, making it difficult or impossible to engage in certain activities. There are a variety of factors that can cause chronic back pain, from one-time injuries to gradual wear and tear. One cause of chronic pain in the back stems from arthritis, which weakens the joints of the spine. This breaks down the vertebrae and the spongy discs that separate them, causing painful compression on the spinal cord and the nerve roots that begin at the spine.

In an attempt to rebuild lost bone mass, the body often tries to compensate by growing osteophytes, or bone spurs. These bony projections can protrude into the spinal canal, narrowing it and irritating nerves. Bone spurs can also push the discs out into the spinal column, where the discs may press nerves and even rupture, sending the jelly-like contents of the disc into the spinal canal.

What Can You Do About Chronic Back Pain?
Regardless of what's causing your chronic back pain, the good news is that you don't have to suffer from your symptoms. If physical therapy and medication do not succeed in correcting the problem, surgery may be right for you. Recent advances in arthroscopy have made the surgical option far less traumatic.

The mission of the Bonati Institute for Advanced Arthroscopic Surgery (www.bonati.com) is to treat patients suffering from chronic back and neck pain with the most advanced and effective surgical procedures available. Using a surgical approach that requires only very small incisions, The Bonati Procedures can be perfomed on an outpatient basis. The result is less pain and significantly fewer risks than open back surgery.
